[kæʃl], irisch Caiseal, Stadt in der County Tipperary (South Riding), im Süden der Republik Irland, 2 800 Einwohner.
 
 
Die 1127-34 erbaute Cormac's Chapel, ein Hauptwerk der irischen Romanik mit steilem Steindach und zwei Türmen anstelle eines Querschiffs, ist im Stil der anglonormannischen Architektur durch Blendbögen gegliedert. Saint Patrick's Cathedral, 1169 begonnen, heute Ruine, ist v. a. ein gotischer Bau des 13. Jahrhunderts; im Westteil ein im 15. Jahrhundert als bischöflicher Palast errichtetes Turmhaus. - In der Stadt am Fuße des Felsens u. a. die Kathedrale Sankt Baptist (1750-83) und ein ehemaliges Dominikanerkloster (13.-15. Jahrhundert). Nahebei die Ruinen von Hore Abbey (13. und 15. Jahrhundert; National Monument).
 
 
Cashel, eine der ältesten Städte Irlands, wird überragt vom Rock of Cashel oder Saint Patrick's Rock (ein Riffkalkfelsen) mit mächtigem Ruinenkomplex. Vom 4. bis 12. Jahrhundert war Cashel Sitz der Könige von Munster; frühchristlicher Bischofssitz, seit 1111 Erzbistum. 1171 nahm hier Heinrich II. von England die Unterwerfung irischer Erzbischöfe und Bischöfe entgegen.
